SJLA Readings at the Rogue Festival

The San Joaquin Literary Association is at it again, this time at Fresno’s coolest fringe festival.  Please come hear MFA students and members of SJLA read their poetry and prose at the 2011 Rogue Festival.  All readings will be held at the amazing CIty Arts Gallery in the tower district (1475 N. VanNess). Each of four dates (March 4, 5, 6, and 12) features four readers.  Admission is five dollars.  We hope to see you there!

KUDOS: 2010 Summer Workshop Edition

Many of our MFA students are headed to prestigious nationwide summer workshops in the next few months, and we’d like to take a moment to recognize their accomplishment in being accepted, and to wish them luck. Way to represent the Fresno State MFA Program!

Tin House Summer Writers Workshop, Portland, OR

We’re proud to recognize the following SEVEN students who were accepted to Tin House this summer: fiction writer Rafael Sanchez, poet Jake Kelly, fiction writer Kristofer Whited, poet Andre Yang, fiction writer Tiffany Crum, poet Michelle Brittan, and recent fiction graduate Elizabeth Martin. That’s quite a formidable contingency– look out, Portland!

Fiction writer Tiffany Crum has also been accepted to the Sewanee Writers’ Conference in Sewanee, TN. Congratulations, Tiffany!

Congratulations to fiction student Miguel Jimenez, who has been accepted to the Advanced Writing Workshop offered by the VONA Writers Workshop. Congratulations are also in order for poet Cynthia Guardado, who was also accepted to VONA this summer. Way to go, Miguel and Cynthia!

KUDOS: February 2010

It’s been a busy month for the MFA Program! We’re smack in the middle of an exciting hiring process for a new Fiction faculty member and the Spring Reading Series is in full gear. This week, we’re pleased to welcome essayist and Director of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, John D’Agata, whose new book, About a Mountain just hit shelves.

But before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s take a moment to celebrate some great news for our students and faculty…

Steven Church‘s new new book (remember, Theoretical Killings: Essays and Accidents just came out a couple of months ago) was just released from Soft Skull Press. The man’s on fire. Congrats, Steven!

The Acentos Review


Fiction student Rafael Sanchez‘s story “Ambivalencia” was just accept for publication by The Acentos Review, a fine online literary journal that’s been around for a few years now. Hearty congrats to Rafael!

TIME YOU LET ME IN: 25 POETS UNDER 25 is a wonderful new collection of poems put together by Naomi Shihab Nye. The best part is that the volume includes poems by our own students, Michelle Brittain and Jocelyn Stott. Congratulations to Michelle and Jocelyn!

Recent Creative Nonfiction graduate Josh Geist‘s essay “King of the Ogres” has been picked up by a new magazine, Kill Screen, which is setting out to publish serious writing about gaming.
