KUDOS: Carole Firstman and Jackie Heffron Williams

Carole Firstman and Jackie Heffron have been selected to present their work at the Central California Graduate Research and Creative Activities Symposium to be held in the Henry Madden Library on Thursday, May 2, 2013 from 1:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Carole’s presentation from “Origins of the Universe and What It All Means,” and Jackie’s presentation “Brunch, and other Portmanteus” will take place between 2:30-3:30.
John Hales is their faculty sponsor.

Carole Firstman, Shane Velez and Richard Margolis have been accepted to present a panel titled “Practicing Feminist Rhetoric: Three Experimental Writing Projects on Gender, Identity, and Representation”  for the 2013 Feminisms and Rhetorics Conference, to be held at Stanford from September 25 to 28, 2013.

 

Also Michael Gray’s “I Was Born in My Mama’s Heart: An Experimental Exploration of Gender and Chinese Adoption,” has been accepted for presentation at the 2013 Feminisms and Rhetorics Conference as well.

This week, we’ve learned that our MFA program has had ten students accepted to the Tin House Writer’s Workshop. Congratulations to Liza Butler, Peter Driscoll, Megan Baptista Geist, Carole Firstman, Jake Kelly, Andrea Mele, Yinka Reed-Nolan, Brandi Spaethe, and Ashley Wells. Great job, everyone!

Current Creative Nonfiction Student Carole Firstman’s short essay “Curve Ahead” has been accepted for publication by Knee Jerk. Congratulations, Carole!

Recent Graduate James Tyner’s  poem “At the Veterans Hospital in Fresno, CA  September 11, 2001″ is a finalist in the Consequence Poetry Prize and is published in the latest issue of Consequence Magazine. Good work,  James!

Recent Graduate Liz Scheid has a new and amazing essay up at Terrain.org, a super-cool magazine. Check out “It Begins With Neon Lights”! Excellent news, Liz.
