KUDOS: May 2010

It’s been a busy spring semester for the students and faculty of Fresno State’s MFA Program! First, let’s celebrate recent awards and publications:

Fresno Arts Council Horizon Award and Northwest Review Publication

Poetry Professor and Porgram Coordinator Connie Hales has been awarded a prestigious Fresno Arts Council Horizon Award. The award is given to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions toward the enrichment of life in our community through excellence in the arts. In addition, Connie’s poems “Forgiven” and “Failed Blessing” have both been accepted for publication in the Northwest Review. Congratulations, Connie, and well-deserved for all that you do!

Full Teaching Assistantship awarded to recently accepted PhD in Creative Writing candidate

Soon-to-be-graduate in nonfiction Sarah Fawn Montgomery has been awarded a full teaching assistantship to the University of Nebraska’s PhD program in creative writing, plus a $15,000 a year stipend. Congratulations to Sarah Fawn, who rose to the top of the applicant field in a competitive year for PhD programs nationwide!

CALYX Publication  

Heart congratulations to poetry student Megan Baptista Geist, whose poem “Elegy for a 1962 Ford Falcon Ranchero” has been accepted for publication in CALYX magazine. Way to go, Megan! 


Redactions: Poetry & Poetics Publication 

Poetry student Barbara Price strikes again with a publication in Redactions: Poetry & Poetics, which accepted her poem, “Switch.” Way to go, Barbara! 


Graduate Dean’s Medalist and Outstanding Thesis Award

Congratulations to soon-to-be-graduate nonfiction writer, Rachel Jackson, who was selected as this year’s College of Arts & Humanities Graduate Dean’s Medalist AND recipient of the College of Arts & Humanities Outstanding Thesis Award for her memoir, Here and Gone.

Graduate Research and Creative Arts Symposium

Congratulations to poets Murleen Ray and Marcus Chinn, who will present their poetry at the Fresno State Graduate Research and Creative Arts Symposium!

Brevity Publication 

And finally, because no KUDOS post is complete without mention of one of our busiest colleagues, who is having a great year… Nonfiction Professor Steven Church‘s essay, “Lag Time,” which he read at his book release party last Friday (for BOTH of his new books released in 2010), appears in the most recent issue of Brevity. Way to go, Steven– keep ‘em coming!

Umbrella Factory and the Sewanee Writers’ Conference
A double dose of good news for fiction student Tiffany Crum, whose story “Virginia” was accepted for publication in Umbrella Factory and who has been accepted to the Sewanee Writers’ Conference this summer. Way to go!
The Atlantic Student Writing Contest
Congratulations to essayist Rachel Jackson, whose essay “Principles of Concealment” was selected as an Honorable Mention in The Atlantic‘s Student Writing Contest!
The Chaffey Review and good news on PhD Program applications
Two pieces of great news for essayist Sarah Fawn Montgomery, whose essay, “Deferred Intentions” was accepted for the May issue of the Chaffey Review, and who was recently accepted to the University of Nebraska’s PhD Program in Creative Writing. Sarah Fawn is also on the waiting list at the University of Missouri, another fine PhD program. Way to go, Sarah Fawn!
Brevity Guest Blogger
Nonfiction professor Steven Church acted as guest blogger for Brevity, commenting on ethics and aesthetics in nonfiction in reaction to John D’Agata’s new book, About a Mountain. Check it out here!
Monkey Puzzle
Poetry professor Tim Skeen‘s poem “Theosophy” appears in the new issue of Monkey Puzzle, as does poetry student, Barbara Price‘s poem, “I Hope You Got a Copy of the Memo, Louise.” Congratulations to Tim and Barbara!
Book contract with Heydey Books
Interdisciplinary Master of Arts student Joel Pickford, who took classes in creative nonfiction with the MFA Program last year, has just learned that the project on which he was working, a book titled “Soul Calling: A Photographer’s Journey in the Hmong Diaspora” has been accepted for publication by Heydey Books. Heart congratulations, Joel!
Poetry Rhythm Magazine
Recent poetry graduate Ana Garza has a poem, “On the Phone” appearing in the next issue of Poetry Rhythm Magazine. Congratulations, Ana!
Writers’ Bloc
Fiction student Peter Driscoll‘s story, “The Perpetual State of Hegemony,” just came out in Writers’ Bloc, an online journal. Congratulations, Peter!

Pushcart Prize Nomination & Anthologized Poem

James Tyner‘s poem, “At a Barbecue for R.C. One Week After He is Out of Iraq” was nominated for a Pushcart Prize by Autumn House Press. He also has a poem in the new anthology THE WORKING POET: 75 WRITING EXERCISES AND A POETRY ANTHOLOGY. It’s available from Amazon.com. Congratulations, James!

Translation in Ezra

Kirsten Sanft‘s translation of an excerpt from the book-length poem “Altazor” by the Chilean poet, Vicente Huidobro has been accepted for publication in the Spring 2010 issue of Ezra. Congratulations, Kirsten!

Recent MFA grad Burlee Vang‘s poems “Story Cloth” and “Incantation for Rebirth” have just been accepted for publication in MELUS’ special issue of Poetry and Poetics.

 

Verdad, Askew, and Poet Lore

David Dominguez has 4 poems out this month: “Consuelo” and “Unpacking, ” Askew poetry magazine. “The Ted Dominguez Latin American Combo,” Verdad literary journal. “To the Ghost of Cesar Chavez,” Poet Lore magazine.

Kartika Review

Vuong Vu, recent MFA graduate–has a poem “The Hmong” in the current issue of Kartika Review.

Andrés Montoya Memorial Scholarship

These are $500 scholarships awarded on the basis of merit to Chicano/a students who are pursuing a career in creative writing. This year’s recipients are:

Undergraduate Students: Erin Alvarez and David Campos

(This year the judges decided to award a scholarship to two undergraduate students because they couldn’t choose between two terrific finalists. )

MFA graduate, Eric Parker just had a nonfiction piece, “Feeding the Rich,” accepted for publication in New South. Eric was solicited by an Editor after she read his blog, where Eric writes about his experience delivering pizza to some of the wealthiest people in America.
